Icon System for F-Secure
Background
F-Secure, a Finnish cybersecurity leader, identified inconsistencies in its product iconography that impacted usability and brand cohesion. As a visual designer at F-Secure, I led the redesign to modernize the icons, improve accessibility, and align with the company’s renewed brand.
Objective
To redesign the product’s iconography to enhance usability, create visual consistency, and strengthen the brand’s identity while adhering to modern design trends and accessibility standards.
Design Strategy:
Establishing Guidelines:
Created a grid with rules for line weight, padding, color usage, and icon grid structure. We decided to use 2px stroke with consistent padding to maintain the brand style used across company’s renewed brand and UI updates for products
Defined categories (e.g., navigation, actions, features) and ensured consistent treatment for each.
Concept Development:
Explored multiple styles, including:
Flat vs. skeuomorphic design.
Line-based vs. filled icons.
Monochrome vs. multi-color schemes.
Challenges
Tight schedule as the project needed to be delivered in 2 months timeframe to be able to update to UIs
The icon set needs to be generic and simple enough as core principle for white label designs, but also needs to speak out for F-Secure brand that enhances the reliability and friendly, ease of use product
Results
A set of more than 150 icons used cross platforms like mobile, desktop app and web-app
Icon using token that can be adapted to light and dark modes and customisable for clients
Visual style guide established for further development and collaborate with other designers
